We all are aware of high probability of S400 deal closure during the upcoming Russian visit of Indian defense minister.
At the whopping cost of around 39000 crores, India may get one of the most potent surface to air missile defense systems in the world.
However, as per very interesting viewpoint published in Axios online portal, this S400 deal may force American government impose economic sanctions on India.
These new sanctions will refresh the memory of American penalties imposed on India after nuclear tests in the year 1998. No doubt, These sanctions will negatively impact the relationship in between two greatest democracies in the world.
Last year in August month, US congress passed Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, and reluctant president trump had to sign on it.
Besides many other things, This act allows american sanctions for any transaction with Russian defense, or intelligence sectors.
In the ideal world, as per this act, American administration can impose sanctions on India if S400 deal is concluded.
However, Besides India, there are other NATO allies like Turkey and even Afghanistan, who are dependent on Russian defense equipment and technology.
You know, Turkey has been in discussion to buy S400 systems from Russia.
America has been trying very hard to persuade its NATO ally to abandon the deal, else Turkey should be ready to face the consequences.
However, until now, we have not heard any threatening comments from America with respect to our S400 deal.
More interestingly, America is likely to adopt case by case approach to implement this act.
Before blindly imposing sanctions on India as per the act, America will have to consider the totalities of circumstances.
In senate briefing, Senior state department official clearly stated to have flexible standards, and an exception can be made, if there is an ally, whom America wants to have strong military capabilities.
That’s where India deserves this exception. We share border with two nuclear power countries, and America should prefer strong India in Indo Pacific region against very aggressive China.
As far as we think, With holistic viewpoint, America will not impose sanctions on India because of S400 deal.
Let’s be clear, even if America imposes sanctions, we should not care. From long term strategic viewpoint, we are acquiring this defense equipment.
That’s where, we need to work more closely with Trump administration to ensure, both nations are on the same level of understanding.
If you allow us to assume, recent high level US visit of Indian top level officials confirms, that the serious deliberation is going on behind the closed doors.
