Has India become MEMBER after NSG meeting?

Hello Friends, welcome to Real Quick Info channel. Lets discuss about today's topic.



As you know, On 14 and 15 June, the plenary meeting of Nuclear Suppliers Group is held in Latvia.



The Public statement issued after the meeting specifically mentioned, There was indeed a discussion about  NSG relationship with India. However, no decision has been made about Indian membership.

Amusingly, There was no mention of Pakistan, who always seek parity with India, and has also applied for the membership.



Understandably, the focus remained on Nuclear Program of North Korea. The american influence on this discussion is revealed from the simple fact, that group asked for complete, irreversible and verifiable denuclearization. These are very same words, we have heard trump administration talking about as goal for talk with North Korean leadership.



There was discussion on Iran nuclear deal  and participating government reconfirmed their commitment to Iran Deal. America seem to have lost here, However given the consensus nature of decision making, its surprising how NSG group as a whole decided to support Iran Nuclear Deal with recent American withdrawal from this very deal. it simply confirms, though America is out of the deal, it does not want it to fall apart.



So far as Indian fate is concerned, it was sealed when in the beginning public statement reads, that group has reiterated firm support for the full complete and and effective implementation of the Treaty on Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), as the cornerstone of the international non-proliferation regime.





With Two Nuclear armed neighbors, India will never take suicidal decision of destroying nuclear weapons for joining NPT.

the path for joining NSG appears closed now.



However, the discussion on how to allow Non NPT states to become NSG member has happened but no conclusion is reached.



The result is, NSG failed to accept India as member.



Though  China is  easy to blame for this out come. yet if you look in the past. In 2008, China allowed India to get NSG waiver only after US president George Bush personally telephoned Chinese president Hu Jintao.



On the one hand, We all know President Trump, he is not going to make a call for India. The so called deal maker president doesn't give anything without taking something else.

On the other hand, With global trade war broken out recently, there is no hope, that President Xi will listen to him.



Moreover, We must also understand this.  besides 5 nuclear states, 43 non nuclear states have lost their right to become nuclear state by signing NPT. that's how 48 members strong NSG came into existence.



Ukraine is one of them.  if it had been A Nuclear state, Russia would never have annexed Crimea.



The point, we are trying to make, these 43 nations have made a sacrifice for being member of NSG, we should not think, they would allow India to join this group without making any kind of sacrifice.



Moreover, if today India becomes member of NSG, it will not end the road for India. but we will obviously ask for permanent membership of security council. the 5 nuclear state member will not want to make Indian claim stronger by allowing it to join NSG as of now.



That's brings us to central point, though many of these 48 nations support Indian candidature individually. Collectively they all are more than happy, when China alone is blocking Indian membership.



the more important thing is, china is ready to take the blame. This confirms, despite the informal talks in between Modi and Xi, hardly anything has moved on the ground.  Hence, The very utility of such informal talks is in question.



This NSG meeting shows us, that path to full membership still very long for us, and we should stay hopeful and engaged for NSG membership.



Moreover, its not simply Granting India the membership of NSG. its about changing the foundational  Thinking at NSG.
