- As we all have heard China assuring whole world that its rising military and economic power is not going to threaten global peace and economic progress.
- However, there has been noticeable difference in between what China says and what it actually does.
- On 16 June 2017, China has unilaterally started building road in Doklam Plateau, which is tri junction point in between India, China and Bhutan.
- Since this is a disputed territory in between China and Bhutan. This means, these two countries have their individual perception of who actually owns this territory.
- In response to this Chinese move, Bhutan decided to ask China to stop all kinds of construction activity in this  area to maintain status quo as per the old agreements in between them.
- As it looks,  for China it was an expected response from Bhutan.
- What perhaps they failed to expect that India could REALLY come forward to protect territorial integrity of it's friend Bhutan.
- As happened in the past, China might have been expecting India's delayed diplomatic response and within a week it would have expected to complete the road construction, thus empowering china with Strategic advantage in that region.
- As its evident from past, ability to successfully build road in Bhutanese territory would have embolden china to further strengthen its position and encroach Bhutanese and Indian territories in future.
- Since India has strategic advantage in tri junction area, Indian troops have started occupying the disputed area with necessary supplies regularly coming from Indian side. Due to this emphatic Indian army's presence, China is not able to make any progress on its road building project.
Unable to proceed, Chinese media started reminding India about its superior power and how it has defeated India in 1962, while forgetting the fact that Indian troops are there in response to Chinese unilateral action.
- Now, China is trying to force India to withdraw its troops as precondition to begin dialogue.
- Under the decisive leadership of Indian PM Narendra Modi, Indian army is no longer a reactive force, In fact it’s well prepared to provide appropriate response to any emerging threat emanating from across the border.
- one more important thing here to notice is that it has always been constant Chinese behavior to disturb the status quo by unilateral action.
- Such threatening behavior is being observed in South China Sea as well. It has already built artificial island ignoring the international laws and the maritime territorial claims of Malaysia Vietnam Philippines and others.
- With rising economic and military power, china should ensure that it respects and abide by international laws and avoid taking unilateral actions to achieve its narrow national objectives. Basically China needs to practice what it preaches.
-China must remember, Without peace and healthy relationship with neighbors, it will eventually be very difficult for any country to keep progressing for long period of time.
- Its equally vital for neighboring countries to remain vigilant to proactively protect their territorial integrity. There is need of effective communication and alliance in between the affected nations so that such unilateral actions against the status quo should be responded appropriately. Hopefully this standoff will provide key insights for all countries entangled in territorial disputes with China. Being major player in this region, India must show leadership here. Under Narendra Modi, its in fact living up to this expectation.
