You know India along with Pakistan have recently joined Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (S C O) on 9 June 2017 in Astana, Kazakhstan.


In this video, we will discuss about an opinion published by Derek Grossman, who is senior defense Analyst. You can find the link to his article in the description box below.

Given the strained Indo-China relationship, China didn't want India to join S C O.  It was Russia  which first proposed that India should become member of S C O.

Somehow Russia was getting worried about increasing Chinese Influence on other S C O members Kazakhstan Kyrgyzstan Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. You may recall these countries used to be Soviet Union members.

When S C O was set up, Russia was having greater control in Central Asia but China's economic and military power has grown rapidly afterwards.  There was fear that China may become threat to Russian interest as well in S C O.

To balance and control Chinese influence in Central Asia, Russia needed some support to slow or block Chinese initiatives. Everyone knows India and Russia have always co-ordinated on international issues, there has been synergistic decade old friendship. Hence Russia strongly promoted Indian entry in S C O.

India has always been concerned about the deep bond of friendship in between China and Pakistan. These two countries have always been working together to harm Indian interests.
China Pakistan Economic Corridor is the latest example. India could not let this friendship to grow further in other organization. India should have the capability to effectively represent its view points. Hence it made sense for India to get entry into S C O as soon as possible.


The S C O is primarily centered on its member nations' security-related concerns, often describing the main threats it confronts as being terrorism, separatism and extremism.

When these things affects China, it leverages S C O to its advantage. But when terrorism affects India, China simply ignores or ensure that Pakistan's interest are not harmed.

Basically China has dual standards, if terrorism works against China, its Bad but when terrorism hits India, its good.


Now that India is part of S C O, It would be easier to expose this very Chinese hipocracy.  Hopefully Russia will help India here or at least It wont support Pakistan and China against Indian interests.

S C O has been very beneficial for China, since the inception, China has smooth ride therein.

The last thing China may want was to let S C O fail, but with India being the member of S C O, China should get ready for friction in S C O functioning.

Indian and Russian synergistic relationship will be certainly difficult to ignore for China in future. In short, China has Fallen into the trap laid by Putin and Modi.
