Hello Friends, Welcome to my channel Real Quick Info.
- On 25 July 2017 As part of long delayed deal, Chinese state run company paid more than $1 Billion to get, the majority 70 Percentage stake in the Hambantota port project.
- As per this deal, Chinese firm will operate the newly constructed port for next 99 years.
- This port has immense commercial and strategic potential, it is situated right in the middle of sea trade routes connecting Middle East and Africa to East Asia.
- There was delay because Sri Lankan public and trade unions were against this projects.
- India had concerns, this port can be used by Chinese Military against Indian interest in Indian Ocean region.
- In order to allay Indian fears, a separate company is created to provide security and control the military potential of Hambantota port project. Sri Lanka has majority stake in this company.
- After this arrangement, Sri Lankan permission is required for China to use it for docking Chinese vessels in Hambantota port.
- No matter how Sri lanka modify the port deal to address indian concerns, the fact remains, As long as Sri Lanka is at China's mercy, Beijing will use Sri Lanka for its advantage and India's disadvantage.
- However due to land jobs and sovereignty related concerns, there is wide spread anger in Sri Lankan people against this project.
- China has loaned huge amount of money to Sri Lanka to build infrastructure like multi lane high ways, cricket stadium, industrial park and conference center. However, all these facilities are under utilized leading to economic loss at Sri Lankan side.
Thus Sri Lanka has been caught into Chinese $8 Billion debt trap, which has forced Sri Lanka to have this deal giving China the majority stake in Hambantota port project.
- Amid Doklam stand off, India should not look at Hambantota port deal in isolation.
- China has also got presence in Gwadar port of Pakistan and Overseas military based in Djibouti on Horn of Africa.
- You can see, while China has been taking giant steps in Indian neighborhood, India is used to take just baby steps like forming deeper alliances with United States and Japan to counter balance growing Chinese influence in the neighborhood.
- Under Modi, India needs to shun the lethargic attitude and proactively build strategic relationship to counter the Chinese debt trap diplomacy.
