Hello Friends, Welcome to my channel Real Quick Info.
As per Financial year 2015 data, India is largest Trading partner of Nepal.
In comparison to 14% of Nepalese import from China, 58% of total Nepalese imports come from India.
Now lets talk about Nepalese exports,
In Comparison to 2.3% of Nepalese export to China, 62% of Nepalese export are directed to India.
From Historical cultural and religious perspective, Friendship bond in between India and Nepal has been stronger than friendship bond in between China and Nepal.
However, In last one decade, there has been significant decline in the quality of engagement in between India and Nepal.
Now Nepal has been trying to maintain the equidistant from both India and China.
With this policy, Nepal increases its bargaining power in separate discussion with India and China, it can also choose better deal out of the two deals offered by India and China.
From short term perspective, this policy can work for a few deals. Nepal should not try to play India and China against each other from long term perspective.
Since Bhutan is still in Indian area of influence, China is trying hard to engage more with Bhutan as well. Who knows, Doklam Dispute might have been engineered for this purpose alone.
Alarmingly China and Nepal relationship is growing at the expense of India and Nepal relationship. this is weakening Indian position in South Asia.
In 2015, when Indian fuel supply blocked due to Madeshi protest, China came forward to fulfill energy needs of Nepal.
But due to this blockade, the prices of essential commodities spiraled up and casted anti India impression on Nepalese masses, specially on young population.
This has created perfect environment for the deepening of Nepal and China friendship.
While India didn't join Chinese Belt and Road Initiative, Nepal is participating in it. China has proposed to build $8 Billion rail line connecting Lhasa in Tibet with Kathmandu.
Once this rail line become operational, China may be able to replace India as largest Nepalese trading partner.
As per recent agreement, China will be providing the broad band intenet access to Nepal, after talk on similar agreement with India fell apart.
Going one step further, Now China is proactively supporting anti India groups in Nepal. These groups are asking for greater Nepal, by re-integration of Kumaon and Garhwal regions.
These regions were ceded by Nepal to British India in 1816. regardless these are now integral part of Indian republic.
In this way, China is instigating Nepalese public to claim Indian territory as its own.
The moment Nepal starts making such claims officially, India Nepal friendship will be thing of past.
In Comparison to Indian financial assistance of 337 Million Dollars , China has offered HUGE 8 Billion Dollars towards building infrastructural projects for Nepal.
No wonder, why Nepal is not taking any stand on Doklam dispute.
In this case, taking no stand is equivalent to taking Chinese side.
Indian Visit of Nepal's prime minister is not finished, but there are reports of Chinese President visiting Nepal in October this year to further strengthen the relationship.
Despite decade old friendship with India, its quite evident Nepal is drifting apart.
Mishandeling the diplomatic relationship with Nepal has been major failure of Modi government.
Basically India is paying the heavy price of letting the 2015 Nepalese blockade happen.
Even if India had no role in that blockade, the impression that went across was that India tried to arm twist Nepal.
If this is the case, it will be counted as diplomatic communication issue.
Either way, its failure for India.
From long term perspective, India needs to figure out how to prevent any friendly nation drifting away. With China having deep pockets and check book ready, India cannot afford to take any friendship for granted.
