Hello Friends, Welcome to my channel Real Quick Info.
As part of its Belt and Road initiative and string of pearl strategy against India, China has recently signed deal with Sri Lanka to get the control and developmental rights of southern deep sea port of Hambantota for next 99 Years.

You will be surprised to know, Sri Lanka first offered India to build this project during last UPA regime.
But India looked at this port from sort term myopic commercial perspective. After Indian refusal, Sri Lanka engaged with China to get loan to start the development.

The port was built, but as expected it was not commercially viable and Sri lanka was not able to repay the loan.
Under the straining Chinese debt, Sri Lanka was forced to give the 99 year leasing rights to China.
China now has 15000 Acre of land to build the economic zone.

Now, you understand, China took a long term perspective and now it has firm footing in the Indian ocean.
Only because Indian government was lethargic in responding to geopolitical threats being posed by China.

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is proactively taking steps to protect Indian interests from long term perspective.
First India engaged with Sri Lanka to get leasing terms modified in such a manner, to ensure this port cannot be used by china for any military or naval purpose.

In this way, Modi government has been able to right the wrong committed during last UPA regime.

Friends let me tell you, China also loaned $190 Million  to Sri Lanka to build its second international airport Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, which started operation in 2013.
Please mind it, This airport is just 40 Kilo meter away from the Hambantota port.
Here again the same story, this airport was also not commercially viable.

It has been called  "The world's emptiest International Airport" due to its low number of flights despite the large size of the airport.
Since the airport is not generating enough revenue to pay back the Chinese loans, Sri Lankan government called for Expressions of Interest to run commercial activities of the Airport.

In response, Sri lankan government received total 8 proposals. Interestingly, China also submitted its proposal to take over the airport.

but this Time, India proposal alone being reviewed separately. In other words, rest 7 proposals including chinese proposal is not being reviewed.

As part of proposal, India will pump $205 Million into the airport for a 70% share for 40 years.

Indian proposal was approved by Sri Lanka's Civil Aviation Minister and has been sent on to the country's cabinet for review.

If this deal gets closed in near future, you will see, China running Hambantota deep sea port and India running the Mattala airport, at half an hour distance.

In fact, this airport deal will help Sri Lanka in counter balancing Chinese influence. No doubt The rival strategic interests of India and china will be beneficial for Sri lanka.

Rather than fighting forever, China and India will also have opportunity to collaborate in Indo pacific region. but it largely depends on China, if it wants India as friend, or Follower.

Anyways, as china invest in developing the economic activity in Hambantota port. With growing business activity, Mattala airport will obviously become commercially beneficial. For India, This will simply be, a big Win.
