While Malabar exercise is being carried out in Bay of Bengal, this exercise will obviously let India and japan to hone the skills of anti submarine warfare in the Arabian sea, which has immense strategic importance because of higher threat perception from Pakistan side.

Significantly, Japan has sent its two P-3 Orion Anti Submarine Warfare aircraft for this wargame.
This is the same aircraft, America has armed its dear friend Pakistan with. Pakistan used them extensively against India in Kargil Conflict.
Right now Pakistan has four P-3 Orion Anti Submarine Warfare aircraft in operation.
Over the years, this aircraft has seen numerous design advancements. Yes, Its a formidable adversarial force against Indian submarines in Arabian sea.
In this background, you may recall, India has acquired more sophisticated Boeing P-8 I Long Range Maritime Reconnaissance Anti Submarine Warfare aircraft , which is replacing Lockheed P-3 Orion in US Navy.
Hence, Indian navy was wise enough to acquire the latest anti submarine aircraft from America.
However, Indian navy is yet to gain exposure how P-3 Orion conducts its anti submarine operation. This knowledge will be crucial while planning the aggressive Indian submarine operations in Arabian sea. In simple words, this exercise will eliminate anti submarine surprise factor from Pakistan's side.
In addition, both navies will be able to learn how to conduct effective joint operations to ensure freedom of navigation in Arabian sea.
