Now Lets discuss about today's topic.
You know, While India  is spending 244 Crore for river dredging in Bangladesh, but Bangladesh is spending only 61 Crore on river dredging in their own country.

The question is Why India is so generous to contribute 80% of the river dredging cost in Bangladesh?

Now lets take a step back.

We all are aware of immense strategic and economic  importance of Siliguri Corridor. which connects land locked North eastern states with rest of India.

This corridor is the hub of rail and road network connecting the strategic military formation along the line of actual control.

We all have fresh memory of Doklam standoff. The Chinese road in that plateau could have given china the capability to launch an overwhelming offensive against India during a conflict, to strangle the corridor and cut of entire north east from rest of India.

In order to handle any such disputes in future, one approach is to be militarily strong enough to protect the important Siliguri corridor. still This is defensive strategy, which will keep the threat alive forever.

The better approach would be to reduce the importance of Siliguri Corridor itself.
If China knows, that India has alternative better options to Siliguri Corridor, its interest in it, will itself diminish. Thus threat perception will  also go down. Hence There will be lesser probability of Doklam like standoffs.

Once the river dredging in Bangladesh is successfully completed, On 4000 Kilometer long water way, large vessels can move from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, to Sadiaya in Upper Assam, through Bangladesh.

We all know, transport through waterway is way cheaper than transport through road or rail network.

Beside huge strategic importance of this continuous waterway, it will usher the era of rapid economic progress in north eastern states. They will have very good sea connectivity by the port in Kolkata. No doubt, in the peace time, this can bring wonders.

The most amazing thing is, India under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi ji, did start work on this project proactively in the July this year.

Still the question remains, why India took 70 years to start work on a common sense project of such immense importance?

Anyways, better late than Never. Doklam dispute convinced us that we must complete this project within Time limit and reduce over dependence on Siliguri Corridor.

India is thankful to Bangladesh for allowing the development of river stretch across its territory. Needless to say, It will bring immense economic benefits to people of Bangladesh as well. We hope, India and Bangladesh continue to remain friends and execute project of bilateral importance.

What do you think about this proactive project of Modi government, please let us know your views in comment section below.
