We all were very happy, when India's first shipment of wheat to Afghanistan was sent through Cha bahar port,
you can recall, 2016 trilateral transit agreement signed by India, Iran and Afghanistan allows Indian goods to reach Afghanistan through Iran.
This agreement allows ports in the western coast of India to connect with the Chabahar port and covers the road and rail links between Chabahar and the Afghan border.
As per The bilateral agreement between India and Iran, India got the right to develop two berths of the Cha bahar port, and this agreement allows India to operate them for 10 years.
You know, Iran had invited both Pakistan and China to contribute to the Cha Bahar project before India. but neither China nor Pakistan had expressed interest in joining then.
Very significantly Even now, Iran is open to Pakistan and China joining it.
There has been an idea that Cha bahar port could be rival of Gwadar port. As per Iran, Cha bahar port and Gwadar port can complement each other.
For example Gwadar has an advantage by being a deep sea port and the expansion of Cha bahar would in fact expand trade through Gwadar. Larger vessels that cannot dock at Cha bahar could dock at Gwadar and the cargo transshipped to Cha bahar.
But Pakistan considered India Iran and Afghanistan alliance as security threat to itself, so it didn't look positively on the idea of Gwardar port helping Cha bahar port.
Now that China effectively owns the Gwadar port until 2059, and they would like to earn as much as possible out of their investment in port, they may be open to allow transshipment from Gwadar port to Cha bahar port.
in this background consider this, Iran is ready to allow foreign firms to handle overall management of Cha bahar port.
Iran has been in discussion with India on the possible bid for the management of the port.
Very significantly, it has been reported that Iran is kind of inclined towards Chinese partners for this bid, obviously to harness the possible synergy in between two ports in Cha bahar and Gwadar.
Friends, you can understand how the things will change for the worse if China gets the overall management rights of the Cha bahar port. It might be a big blow to Indian long term interests in the region.
We believe, even if China gets the management rights of Cha bahar port, it would not be that much harmful given that Chinese are rational and they are more interested in the business of money making. Hence, they can accommodate Indian trade interests as long as it makes them earn money.
But in case of conflict, they can use Cha bahar port to threaten India as well.
As far as we think, India should take this bid seriously, we should come forward with our best possible proposal for this bid. Our proposal must make economic sense, it should not happen that just to defeat Chinese bid, we enter in to money burning engagement.
