Thanks to China, While global attention is now focused on building good infrastructure to improve connectivity in Asia, there is an Idea of Hanumaan Bridge, which has been on drawing board for last 15 years.
In 2002, the then Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, put forth the idea of building the “Hanuman Bridge” across the Palk Strait between Dhanushkodi in mainland India and Talaimannar in Sri Lanka.
We all know and Geological evidence suggests, that India and Sri lanka were land connected by Ram Setu in the past.
Historical evidences suggest that Ram setu was above sea level, until it got broken in a cyclone in 1480.
The Hanumaan bridge will be modern infrastructural marvel running parallel to Ram setu. Its very critical to avoid any damage to Ram Setu for very obvious reasons.
Hanumaan bridge has immense potential to develop Tamil-speaking Northern Province of Sri Lanka and increase the trade in between two countries.
Right now, Indian goods land at Colombo port in the south and it takes another 8 Hrs to send the goods to North of Sri Lanka. This non value adding movement of goods hamper the trade growth.
Another interesting benefit of Hanumaan bridge is, it eliminate the layer of Colombo based middle men. Hence, the cost of Indian goods will go down in northern Sri Lanka.
To develop the lagging northern sri lanka, this Hanuman bridge can be real game changer.
Though people in northern sri lanka are in favor of this bridge, people in south sri lanka are opposed to this idea for the fear of migration from India.
As far as we think, South Sri Lankan Sinhalese nationalists may have genuine concern regarding influx of Indians in Sri Lankan Labor market. But this concern can be addressed by having better vigil and security arrangement around the bridge.
Moreover bilateral relationship is way better now, so far as fishermen related problems are concerned, the dialogue is going on to reach common understanding soon.
Both Sri Lanka and India are mature friendly nations and we should be able to find amicable resolution of any conflicts of interests.
Hence, the focus should be on growing bilateral trade and developing the lagging northern Sri Lanka, No doubt 23 Kilometer long Hanuman Bridge is going to accelerate this.
As of now, due to fear of South Sri Lankan Sinhalese nationalists, even Sri Lankan government is not publicly supporting this project.
Still, this good idea is brain child of current Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. In Indian union Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari, there is person who can energize the project.
The proposal for Hanuman bridge has been submitted to Asian Development Bank, and they are ready to provide funds for this economically viable project.
Sri Lanka needs to realize the significance of reducing the developmental gap in between its northern and southern parts.
We believe, sooner or later, The leadership in Sri Lanka has to take positive decision about this project. Economic potential of Hanumaan Bridge is so much that its just a matter of time to have correct political environment to set the ball rolling on this project.
