Now Lets discuss about today's topic.
You know, Singapore is situated at the eastern edge of a water channel that is the shortest route between Indian Ocean and pacific ocean.
Changi Naval Base is the latest naval facility of the Republic of Singapore Navy. This base is located at the gateway to the contested waters of South China Sea.
Until now, Only Royal Navy of United kingdom and United States navy could use this naval base for logistics and re-supply.
As part of India's first naval logistics agreement with any East Asian Country, India gets its first logistic base in Changi Naval Base.
Though India and Singapore have friendly relationship, yet it used to take weeks for Indian navy to get permission to use this naval base due to long process delays.
Now, Indian navy can directly engage with Singaporean authorities whenever they need to use their facilities.
This effectively means, Indian navy ships sailing through the disputed south China Sea or in the Andaman sea , will be able to refuel, restock and if needed rearm at Changi Naval Base before going forward on their mission. Hence This logistics base will allow Indian navy to perform long duration mission across the Indo Pacific region.
This is mutual logistics support agreement, hence Singapore can leverage Indian naval infrastructure as well on need basis.
In addition to it, India has also allowed Singapore's military to train its troops on Indian soil, given that Singapore has space constraints.
Very significantly, in order to reduce man power and long time requirement, Changi Naval Base has automated underground ammunition depot that allows ammunition to be loaded onto ships and an automated warehouse system to store items.
Besides using it, Indian navy can certainly learn from this highly sophisticated naval base. No doubt, boys are going to have a lot of fun.
Fundamentally, This agreement confirms the shared objectives of India and Singapore to maintain maritime freedom of navigation across the trade routes according to the international laws.
You can recall, recently Indian navy has decided to deploy warships on a continuous basis at critical oceanic choke points to keep track of movement of Chinese vessels.
With need basis access of this naval base, Indian navy has got additional flexibility to operationally field its warships in the region throughout the year.
We all are aware of immense strategic and economic importance of Mallaca strait which is critical for Chinese energy supplies and export.
Needless to say, Its very important shipping route for Indian trade as well.
Historically, Indian primary area of interest remained in between Persian gulf and straits of Malacca.
With this naval base, Indian interest and engagement has strongly expanded towards south china sea as well.
Though at high level it looks against Chinese interests, but if you look carefully such agreement are not reactive in approach.
Wisdom says, "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty". In order to protect our rights we need to get in to such pacts with friendly countries.
For very obvious reasons, having such logistical pacts is better than having our own naval base in east Asian country.
Anyways, it would be very amusing to listen Chinese reactions once Indian vessels start docking in Changi Naval Base.
Yes Friends, Gone are the days, when India used to react to Chinese vessels docking in Indian Ocean.
As per your views, do you think our focus should still be on developing our own dedicated naval base in East Asian countries?
