Now Lets discuss about today's topic.
Taiwan or Republic of China is an east Asian state, having People's Republic of China to the west and Japan to the north east.
India doesn't have official diplomatic relations with Taiwan, or Republic of China, which claims to be legitimate government of Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau.
Right now, peoples republic of China controls the Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau.
The roots of these contesting claims and conflict goes back to Chinese Civil War 1945-49.
People's Republic of China has propagated one China policy, which means Any country seeking diplomatic relationship with it, must break official relation with the Republic of China, or Taiwan.
You would be amazed to know, India was one of the first Asian countries to recognize government of People's republic of China and its One china policy in 1950s. this was one more blunder of great Nehru vian era.
The great Indian non alignment movement hangover prevented any kind of relationship in between India and Taiwan for close to 50 years.
In 1990, Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narsimha Rao, unofficial bilateral relationship got established in between India and Taiwan as part of Look East policy.
Rather than improving this bilateral relationship, Atal Bihari Bajpayi led government once again confirmed Indian commitment to "One China Policy".
Only in current government, India started asking China to first accept 'One India Policy' if it wants India to continue its support to 'One China policy'.
One India policy means, China has to accept that India has legitimate control over entire Jammu and Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh.
When we know that China will never accept One India Policy, its beyond our understanding that India took 70 years to realize that Indian support to One China Policy is not possible without Chinese support to One India Policy.
but no body can help, if successive Indian governments thought that appeasement of China will sow the seeds of better bilateral relationship.
While credit must be given to all government in the last 27 years to have maintained a certain level of unofficial diplomatic engagement with Taiwan. This was done to avoid any discomfort to People's Republic of China.
While India and Taiwan have already established representative offices in each other's country.
There has been proposal for India to deploy its attache, or specialize diplomatic official to its office in Taiwan, as part of plan to strengthen defense cooperation.
Given that Japan and America have already dispatched their military attaches to theirs missions in Taiwan. India can also deploy such official there. China will obviously say that, we are playing with fire.
But when it didn't have problem with Military attache of Japan and America in Taiwan, why it should have problem with Indian Military Attache. China would be at pains to give answer of this question to the world.
Besides, seeking better diplomatic and defense relationship, we need to look at Taiwan from infrastructural development point of view as well.
It would be interesting to see if Taiwan is some how enrolled in the Quadrilateral of America, Japan India and Australia.
Obviously, some innovative quad structure, or framework can be formed for this. wisdom says, When there is will, there is a way.
Moreover, India should not limit relationship with Taiwan as strategic card to play to bargain with China.
Since, China and Taiwan are improving their relationship, There is no issue if India and Taiwan also take their relationship to next level for the benefit of each other.
To begin with, The quad forum with some kind of informal involvement of Taiwan could be an option to pursue for the success of this endeavor.
