You know, The promising idea of Iran Pakistan India gas pipe line was conceived way back in 1950. In the decade of 1990, this idea was conceptualized and inter governmental discussion continued on this project for more than 20 years.
We all know, due to Global sanctions on Iran, this project could not take off.
We all are told that main reason of global sanctions on Iran was its Nuclear program. but in Russia, it is said Global sanctions were applied on Iran, only because of this gas pipeline project.
America supports the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (Tapi) Pipeline, which directly competes with Iran- Pakistan- India gas pipeline and serve the same market.
As a matter of fact, America has tried to persuade India to use Tapi pipeline to meet its growing energy needs in cost effective manner.
Though its understandable that TAPI pipeline might be very beneficial for the development of Afghanistan, but the main reason was the Former American secretary of state Hillary Clinton had major share holding in the company, which was promoting TAPI pipeline.
Her personal interest and desire to stop easy fund flow to Iran could be two of the reasons, why America pushed TAPI project, which has lesser economic viability than Iran- Pakistan- India pipeline project. Perhaps, that's why TAPI project could not take off till now.
Its said that a good idea will always survive.
Now that, global sanctions on Iran are thing of Past, despite whatever Trumps says in public, its unlikely that same set of sanctions can be applied on Iran again.
Though Iran Pakistan and India are directly involved in this project, there was need to get support of common force which can co-ordinate the efforts of these three government.
In fact, no international project is feasible without the active endoresement of major global power.
In this background, Russia has made forward movement. Under the leadership of President Putin, Russia and Iran have signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on building a 12000 kilometer long natural gas pipeline between Iran and India.
From Russian side, state controlled gas giant Gazprom will take part in a project for the construction of a gas pipeline between Iran and India.
The route of this pipeline could be different from the routes suggested in the past. it may even include under water section in the Persian gulf.
Yes, There is need for all participating countries to reach legal and technical agreement before actual construction work begins in next year.
The relevant question is, why Russia is getting involved in this project. The answer is, they want to increase their influence in middle east.
In today's time, all major powers seem to have learnt from China , that implementing the massive scale infrastructural projects is the only way to stay relevant in new world order.
so far as India is concerned, active involvement of Russia will ensure that efforts of all nations are streamlined to make forward movement on the ground. Very interestingly, Russia seem to have developed good relationship with Pakistan as well. Hence, Pakistan will have to think twice before blocking the moves of powerful Putin.
Apart from Iran Pakistan India pipeline route, there was another proposal to have direct under sea pipeline in between Iran and India.
So far as we understand, India and Iran will not be in a position to get involved in such huge capital intensive project on their own.
Moreover, Pakistan is also a big energy market, Pakistan will at least bear the cost of pipeline construction in its territory.
In such projects, its wise to have as many countries involved as possible.
Earlier, America was against Iran Pakistan India Pipeline, but now Russia has taken a lead to make this pipeline project fly.
We need not worry much about Pakistan, let Iran and Russia handle it.
Please note, From Indian side, the official governmental position on Russian involvement in this project is not known.
