In addition, Prominent global oil and gas exploration companies have always stayed away from bidding for Israeli oil and gas blocks, because they obviously didn’t want to antagonize their major Arab Gulf clients.
Hence, Besides the consortium of Indian oil and gas companies, Israel received bids from Greek firm Energean, which already has the rights of Israel's Karish and Tanin gas fields.
In order to improve the commercial potential of these gas blocks , Israel is planning to generate 70 to 80% of its all electric power by natural gas.
In addition, Israel has entered into memorandum of understanding to lay a natural gas pipeline from Israel to Italy.
Thus , Israel is trying hard to make these oil and gas blocks commercially viable.
In response to recently concluded bidding round, Israel's energy ministry gave preliminary approval to Greek and Indian bids to explore oil and gas in the eastern Mediterranean.
As Greek firm Energean has already proven its technical prowess in extracting gas from Israeli gas blocks, they are granted licenses to explore five offshore blocks. Interestingly, these blocks are near by the blocks which are already being operated by Energean .
In a significant shift , Indian group has been granted the preliminary approval for drilling and exploration in one block.
Greek and Indian companies need to provide technical details and transfer guarantees for licenses within 30 days to receive the final approval.
For Indian firms, its new opportunity and we should demonstrate our oil and gas exploration capabilities. More than anything else, we need to show our ability to complete the project in time bound manner.
In this round, bids have been accepted for only 6 out of 24 blocks, which were on the table.
Since, Israel got only two bids proposals for consideration, they have decided to learn from this round, which received tepid response. and Israel will hold another round of bidding next year.
Friends, India Israel friendship apart, this is commercial transaction, we should be ready to compete with the best in the world in next round.
In fact, this one block could be good testing grounds for Indian firms, and we should learn here and fine tune our proposal for next round of bidding. Who knows, we may win more blocks next time.
Given Local Israeli and European market are key customers for expected 2 Billion cubic meters of natural gas, and 6 Billion barrels of oil discovered in Israeli water, there is promising future for these oil and gas blocks.
So far as India is concerned, we will end up diversifying our oil and gas supply sources, thus avoiding possible victimization by the cartel of major oil producing countries.
