Hello Friends, welcome to Real Quick Info channel.

Now Lets discuss about today's topic.

You know, Recently Maldives signed its first ever Free Trade agreement with China.
No need to get surprised. The work on this agreement has been going on for last four years.

Since President of Maldives is scheduled to visit China later this month, and he obviously did not want to give any chance to opposition to cause any delay in the passage of the agreement. Hence, He has shown remarkable haste in getting parliament approval.

You know, the tension in the relationship of India and Maldives has been a  legacy problem for Modi government. Having said that, the bilateral relationship with Maldives have not  improved in last three years either.

To a great extent,  India has mismanaged the relationship with Maldives.

Lets take example of Main international airport of Maldives, which was leased to Indian company G M R for 25 years.
There was huge public outcry for favoring India and compromising the Independence of the republic of Maldives.
For instance- As per the agreement, 4000 Indians were to be employed without subjecting them to employment laws of Maldives.

This air port deal became major election issue.
Its believed in Maldives that India imposed unofficial sanctions on Maldives as part of its support to first democratically elected president Mohamed Nasheed.  Pro Indian candidate president Mohamed Nasheed lost the election, and the G M R deal was cancelled and granted to Chinese company.

On the other hand, The Chinese government understood very well that, Maldives thrives on tourism. Therefore, special flights to Malé and subsidized travel were permitted to generate large revenue for the Maldives.

Indian supported president Naseed has naturally been eye shore to China.
There is no doubt, Current government of Maldives has got full backing of China.
As of now, Maldives owes almost 70% of its debt to Single country namely China. As per world bank, Maldives has very high risk of external debt distress.

As per current government of Maldives, they wanted to protect their independence from India, so they decided to have better relationship with China.

But friends make no mistake, independence and liberty, these all are excuses, its all about how long  current leadership can stay in power.

Now, this government is happily selling or  leasing the reclaimed sea land to Chinese for a very long duration.

As long as current government remains in power, there is no hope about Indian relationship with Maldives improving.

The current leadership perhaps believes that free trade agreement with China will be in their national interest. It will allow them to export fish to wast consumer market of China  and grow local tourism also.
But at the same time, providing full access to Chinese goods ,will allow China to dump its cheap goods in the market of Maldives and this will lead to increase in trade deficit for Maldives.

Friends, This free trade agreement can not be seen as sign of Maldives falling into Chinese debt trap, rather its the result of Maldives having already been trapped in it.

As its very obvious to you, The current leadership of Maldives is simply returning favor to China  in order to remain in power.

At the hindsight, it looks we should stop taking sides with the ruling party in any country. Whosoever rules, we should engage with them on friendly basis.
Maintaining friendly relationship with the government and opposition is key to long term sustainable friendship.

You know friends, In both Nepal and Maldives, India became a casualty in political cross fire.  at the same time, learning from GMR fiasco, we must ensure that we don't enter into such commercial transactions, which can be casted against the interests of local people.

There is no point in assuming that current leadership will be friendly to India in near future.   Hence, we need not overreact to their free trade agreement with China.

Hopefully, Some day people of Maldives will realize, china is their best friend with evil desires.
India might have committed mistakes in handling the delicate friendship, but Indian intentions have never been wrong.
In the end of the day, Its people of Maldives, who should determine their own future.
Hence, As far as we think, we need to stay away from local politics of any country.  Yes, as a neighboring democratic country we can guide them but we should resist the temptation of interfering in Maldives to establish truly democratic government there.
So far as freedom of navigation in Indian ocean is concerned, we should make ourselves strong enough so that we need not depend on other counties to ensure the protection of our maritime rights.

As per your views,  should India interfere in local politics of Maldives to get the favorable government installed there?
