We all know, that Lockheed Martin offered to shift assembly line of its most advanced and powerful fighter jet F 16 to India.
and American firm Lockheed Martin has been competing with Sweden's Saab for 10 Billion Dollar tender for fighter jets.
But Last year, Lockheed Martin has expressed its unwillingness to transfer the technology of F 16 fighter jets to India
While Saab has offered complete technology transfer for its Gripen E fighter jet. But there is big catch, Saab doesn't own even up to 30 percent of the key technologies employed in Gripen E fighter jet. So even if Saab Offers full technology transfer, it will be very difficult for them to convince original technology developers to transfer technology to India.
Therefore, India is not very confident about the offer made by Saab.
In this background, Lockheed Martin has tried to sweeten deal for India.
Now they are ready to create more than an assembly Line in India.
Interestingly proposed India specific platform is powered with technologies from Lockheed Martin's F 22 and F 35 jets, which are only operational fifth generation fighter jets in the world.
For example , Active Electronically Scanned Array Radar system on F 16 Block 70 empowers this jet with fifth generation fighter radar capabilities. The similar radar related Hardware and software are being used in F 22 and F 35 radars.
Lockheed has also offered that Technology improvement will continue to flow from F 22 and F 35 towards F 16 in future.
So first lets be clear, as being suggested in the media, Lockheed Martin has not offered custom built F 35 jets to India.
They have just repackaged their deal. the similar radar in between F 16, F 22 and F 35, is not at all an exclusive offer made to India. Its normal configuration of F 16 Block 70 jet.
Possibility of Future upgrades is certainly a key positive point. This will ensure new F 16 jets remain combat worthy for significantly long period of time.
Moreover, India has never been looking to buy fighter jets, we are looking for future ready flexible platform so that we can modify and upgrade it in the future.
With F 16 deal, India can become part of world's largest fighter aircraft manufacturing ecosystem. In this way, India made fighter jets can be exported as well.
While we are hesitant to provide conclusive viewpoint in favor of F 16 in comparison to Gripen E.
one of the major criticism of F 16 jet was that, it doesn't have any scope for future improvements, Now it appears, that Lockheed is trying to address this negative point.
Hopefully, Indian defense decision making administration will consider all aspects of offers on the table, and make the best decision.
Only one concern we have, we should take decision fast. Prolonged Delay in the decision making is not in the interest of our nation.
Hopefully, Under strategic partnership model, India will soon select either F 16 Block 70, or Gripen E.
