Hello Friends, welcome to Real Quick Info channel. Lets discuss about today's topic.
Due to global warming, The Arctic is warming faster than any other region on earth. As Arctic ice is melting, the region has opened up to shipping and energy industries.
If current trend goes on, by the end of this century, Arctic shipping route could remain navigable for more than half of the year.
This Northern shipping route can cut the trip between Asia, Europe and North America in Half, in comparison to trip through current route which goes through Suez Canal.
Last year, a Russian tanker was able to travel from Norway to South Korea without an ice breaker escort for the first time in a trip that took only 19 days.
You know, Arctic council is group of countries, which share Arctic region. Interestingly, both China and India are observer countries in the Arctic council.
While Arctic shipping routes for international trade make obvious economic sense, this region also offers wast opportunities in the areas of oil, gas, mineral resources, fishing and tourism.
No wonder, China has just released white paper outlining its plan for Polar Silk Road, which will fall under the its massive Belt and Road initiative.
Though China does not border the Arctic region, yet its interestingly calling for greater international cooperation over infrastructure and shipping routes in the arctic.
Chinese growing interest in Arctic region has prompted Arctic states to be concerned about the long term Chinese strategic objectives and its possible military deployment.
All countries have clearly seen Chinese behavior in South China Sea and Indian Ocean, there are more than enough reasons for these arctic states to be suspicious about Chinese real intentions.
As expected, While believing that concerns of Arctic states are unnecessary, China is saying that, it hopes to work with all parties to build a polar silk road. That's how China works.
Still we should appreciate the Chinese daring vision to come up with the idea of Polar silk road, even when there are serious concerns about possible damage to nature and environment.
While Global Warming has offered better shipping routes, its very important to ensure that freedom of navigation and rule of international law is maintained in these new routes.
The Arctic council should not let China take the leadership role here. Though India has clearly missed this huge opportunity once again, hopefully as observer nation of Arctic Council, India should contribute positively.
If Arctic council doesn't wake up, Chinese nuclear submarines may patrol in Arctic shipping route in anti piracy missions in future. There is need to think about next 50 years, else Arctic Sea may also become another disputed region in the world.
If you want to lead, you got to take initiative. Now China has claimed the leadership role by presenting grand vision of Polar Silk Road.
As per your views, What may be real Chinese intentions behind Polar Silk Road?
