We all know, Maldives is strategically located next to one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.
Being Part of Chinese belt and Road initiative, Maldives is one of the most important pearl in the Chinese string of pearls against India.
In this background, Last year when our focus was centered on free trade agreement, China and Maldives reached common understanding for Protocol on Establishment of Joint Ocean Observation Station.
As per this agreement, Joint Observation center is going to be located in Makunudhoo, which is westernmost inhabited island in Maldives.
This agreement was kept secret for last four months, it will certainly have military use besides civilian use.
With this observation center, China has come very close to India in Indian ocean, to effectively monitor Indian Naval movement and deployments.
While India is still not able to figure out what to do with the authoritarian regime of Maldives. Needless to say, With very well crafted strategy china is moving ahead to grow its influence in Indian ocean.
This is what happens when you lack strategy to deal with an important neighbor. The pathetic way India has handled Maldivian crisis has left India earning the wrath of Yameen regime, and disappointment from democratic opposition forces.
Right now, no body is sure about the applications of this observation center. but bigger problem is, now India cannot even expect to get the truthful reply, or clarification from angry Yameen regime. Hence the damage is done here.
In this background, it’s interesting to note, Early Next month India is going to organize largest ever, Milan naval exercise in the Indian ocean.
Started in 1995, with just five nations participating in it. This time around naval forces of 23 countries from extended Indian ocean region are expected to participate in it.
Interestingly, the theme of this year's Milan International Maritime seminar is, "In Pursuit of maritime good order - Need for comprehensive Information Sharing Apparatus".
Hopefully, this platform will give opportunity for all member of Indian Ocean region, to share views and evolve common strategy to confront those forces, which are unilaterally changing the status quo to their narrow advantage.
Though this International Naval Exercise is supposed to be carried out after each 2 years interval, however its matter of surprise, that Last Milan Naval Exercise was conducted four years back in the year 2014.
These all nations are facing a common challenge from China, Hopefully, Milan naval exercise gets carried out on regular interval.
As its said, together we stand, divided we fall. Hopefully, Milan countries understand the strength of common purpose.
