Hello Friends, welcome to Real Quick Info channel. Lets discuss about today's topic.
While we Indian were watching events unfolding in Maldives, Another nearby neighbor of India entered into political turmoil.
You can gauge the seriousness of the crisis, by knowing the fact that Sri Lankan prime minister had to cancel his planned Indian Visit to weather the political storm at home.
You may recall, in 2015 Parliament election the defeat of Pro Chinese Mahinda Rajapaksa, and Maithripala Sirisena becoming President and Ranil Wickremesinghe becoming the prime minister was major source of relief for India.
But in matter of 3 years, the ruling alliance has ceded so much electoral ground, that newly formed Sri Lanka People's front led by Mahinda Rajapaksa has just won a landslide victory in local government election.
Please consider this, out of 340 electoral authorities, former president Mahinda Rajapaksa led party won massive 249 authorities, current prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe led front has won 42 seat and current president Maithripala Sirisena led alliance has won just 11 authorities.
Unfortunately, the focus of current regime has remained on managing the politics of Sri Lanka, rather than trying to fulfill the developmental needs of local people.
If they had even maintained their support base, the result of the local authority election would have been different.
Though local issues might be prominent in such elections, yet the scale of defeat of ruling parties confirm, that next 2020 Parliamentary election is going to be very difficult for them to win.
Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa has consolidated his support base. more interestingly, majority of sri lankans seem to consider economic development by Chinese money good.
Understandably current regime's decision to sold out Hambantota port to Chinese is considered against the interests of local people.
We need not harbor any illusion, if Mahinda Rajapaksa becomes president again, he will continue his reliance on China.
We can only assume that engagement in between China and Sri Lanka is going to increase.
these local authority election results will be pleasing to china. But if current regime looks at these results in perspective, they still have 2 years to regain their lost support base.
Being India, we can hardly do any thing about how internal politics plays out in Sri Lanka. We could have worked as catalyst in the formation of opposition alliance in the last election.
But the way the alliance has ruled suggests, that historic opportunity has been simply wasted.
As of now, we should be ready to see countries in Indian ocean in crisis and China smiling.
Friends, there can be no news more pleasing for china, than Narendra Modi losing next Indian general election. After all sleeping Indian government makes Chinese job very easy.
