India & France will Sign major Defense agreement in Indian Ocean!!

You know, French president Emmanuel Macron is visiting India on this Friday.



You would be surprised to know, Japan has recently extended invitation towards France to join the quadrilateral forum. However, France has not shown any interest in joining this forum.


Given India and France share common concerns in Indian Ocean region, it appears, France is more interested in having specific bilateral framework, rather than entering into another multilateral forum.



We should appreciate french strategic point of view .



You may know, in Indian Ocean region, France owns huge  exclusive  economic zone, with an area of 11 Million Square kilometer size.



Near Madagascar, France has a naval base in the Reunion island.



 In addition, France has military bases in Djibouti and Abu Dhabi as well.



Just like Logistical frame work agreement with America, which granted India access to Diego Garcia, which is biggest American naval base in Indian Ocean.





Both countries are expected to enter into new logistical framework agreement during the Indian visit of French president.

Thus India may soon have access to French naval infrastructure in Indian Ocean region.



If you can recollect, India has recently entered into other defense cooperation agreements, for example Logistics agreement with Singapore & Oman, and our own Naval base on Assumption Island in Seychelles , Now you may easily figure out, India is rapidly developing capability to easily and effectively operate across Indian ocean.



No doubt, Elevated level of defense cooperation in between India and France will go a long way, to ensure freedom of navigation in Indian Ocean.



Needless to say, Just like India, French naval force may also take advantage of Indian military infrastructure. As you understand, there should not be any concerns around this, since both nations share common strategic objectives in Indian ocean region.

Rather it will develop inter operability in between Indian and French naval forces, which is very critical to conduct modern complex naval operation.





What is more interesting is, Australia has logistics agreement with America, and if India concludes logistics agreement with France, there is possibility of India and Australia also entering into major bilateral agreement in Indo Pacific region.



As far as we can see, we are moving on very well crafted strategy to uphold freedom of navigation in Indian ocean against the Aggressive China.

In addition, the strategic cooperation with other world powers, gives India more bargaining power against China.

In fact, As we have seen in Maldives, we are no longer in reactive mode, we are planning and making choices accordingly.
