Lets discuss about today's topic.
We all know, recently Army Chief of Pakistan has concluded his visit of Maldives.
After the meeting in between Maldivian defense minister and Pakistani Army Chief, it was decided that Pakistan would continue to provide military training and medical aid to Maldives.
But opening new alarming area of cooperation, both nations discussed about the possibility of conducting joint patrol in Maldivian Exclusive Economic Zone in Indian Ocean.
Till now, Only India has been participating in joint patrols in Maldivian Exclusive Economic zone with huge area of 900,000 square kilometer.
There were very sound defense cooperation agreement and shared security interests behind such Indo Maldivian joint patrols.
Besides Maldives, India has been conducting join patrols with Mauritius and Seychelles as well.
Now, it would be interesting to see, if Maldives really conducts joint patrol along with Pakistan in future.
The Bigger question is, what India will do if this eventualities arises.
As you can understand, the current regime in Maldives will be clearly violating the red line, if such move is implemented.
While we continue undeclared boycott of current Maldivian regime, it can be safely assumed that Indian diplomats will make our displeasure known to Maldives.
Maldives can very well say, As a sovereign nation, it’s their right to conduct joint patrol with who so ever they want.
But Maldives must not forget the reality of India being the closer neighbor than both Pakistan and China, and It can not become a security threat to Indian interests.
As far as India is concerned, our hope rests on next presidential elections due in September.
Frankly, past history suggests, there is no possibility of free and fair election being conducted this time around.
With Yameen loyalist Chief Election officer, there is even more doubt about free and fair election.
That’s where, we got to have Plan B in place. if somehow President Yameen wins next election, what India can do to make Maldives face the consequences of crossing the red line.
Else The way things are going, our influence in Indian ocean will continue to decline.
As per your views, Pakistan conducting joint patrol with Maldives is not a threat to Indian interests in Indian Ocean?
