Hello Friends, welcome to Real Quick Info channel.

Lets discuss about today's topic.

You know, United Nations security council has 5 permanent  and 10 non-permanent members.

Each of these non-permanent member is elected by United Nations general assembly for a period of 2 years.

Each year, election for 5 non-permanent members is conducted. The winner must receive at least two third of all the votes casted for a seat.

Next month The election will be conducted. Among these five seats, one Asia Pacific non-permanent seat is also open for election.

Very significantly, 10 years ago Maldives announced its intention to fight for the election in June 2018.

India has always been supporting Maldives first ever bid for Non-Permanent seat in Security Council since 2008, long before Maldives started its official campaign in 2016.

Even now, India is committed to support Maldivian campaign. You know, Prime minister Modi has just landed in the Indonesia.

Rather interestingly, Indonesia is also candidate for the same non-permanent member seat. Winning this seat is primary foreign policy objective for Current Indonesian administration.

In most likelihood, Indonesia will formally seek Indian support for this important election.

Hence, the relevant question is, should we change our position in this election?

Though it’s true that Maldives is our neighbor, and every attempt must be made to strengthen the bilateral relationship, yet this is shared responsibility.

Our Choice in this election should be determined by our commitment towards the democracy and rule of law, not by who is closer in our neighborhood.

For all practical purpose, we can no longer regard current Maldivian regime as India friendly. There has been desire among us, that Maldivian regime should be made to pay the price for its authoritarian conduct.

Fortunately, Election for non-permanent member has offered a good chance for India.

Maldives can very well count on the support of China, but who cares?

With other friendly countries India should actively engage to highlight the violation of law and constitution in Maldives.

As far as we think, Maldives may win, but India must not cast vote in its favor.

Rather Indonesia is better option for us. It carries more clout in the geopolitics. you may recall, In the crucial election for the judge of International court of Justice, Indonesia is believed to have voted in our favor.

On one hand, Maldives care little about Indian interests. on the other hand,  Indonesia is about to grant India the economic and military access to strategic islands of Sabang city.

Hence, it’s time to return the favor. Though India is not opening its cards too early, but it would be interesting to see, How India votes in this important election.

Moreover, In comparison to forceful Indonesian campaign, Maldives is making half hearted attempts.

Even if  India decides to campaign and vote in favor of Maldives, we should ensure that Maldives takes actions on the ground to demonstrate its commitment to democracy and rule of law.

As you can understand, it’s foolish to expect any change in the attitude of Yameen regime. Therefore Let authoritarian china campaign and vote in favor of another authoritarian regime in Maldives.

Considering the recent global criticism of Maldivian regime, There is possibility, even China wont actively campaign for it.

Regardless, India should make a quick decision, and take public posture in United Nations against Maldivian regime.

Supporting worthy candidate is any time better, than voting a candidate only because, he is fighting for the first time. The choice here is rather obvious.

As per your views, should India honor decade old commitment, and support Maldivian candidature for non-permanent member of security council??
