You know, Two  most powerful men on the planet are going to meet today in Helsinki Finland.



While on multilateral Platforms, Trump and Putin have already met couple of times.



This is the first time, two leaders are going to meet in bilateral setting. Given this, World wide people are expecting historical outcomes after this summit.



Needless to say, we Indians are also interested in improved America Russia relationship.



Therefore our discussion will remain focused on  how this summit may impact India.



We all know, Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act has effectively hampered India Russia defense relationship.



No matter, what Indian leadership say for public consumption, that India follows UN laws not US laws.



Rhetoric apart, The fact remains, This act has not only stopped payment to Russia for old deals, but also There is delay in new deals being signed.



Lets be clear, we want to continue our defense relationship with Russia but limiting collateral damage is key concern.



Many of you would say, Due to historical friendship, India must have defense dealing with Russia irrespective of American sanctions.



but we need to look carefully here, With American sanctions, If India buys Russian equipment, the total net cost of Those equipment will go up. 

Because, American sanctions will have cost on Indian economy.



You can keep emotions involved in this decision making, however please mind it, its our taxpayers money involved, when India buys defense equipment from Russia at higher cost.



That's where, Its best if India can continue old and new Russian defense deals without American sanctions.



However, this Trump and Putin summit is not going to help us here.



Because against the wishes of President Trump, Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act was passed by US congress.



No matter, whichever deal these two leaders strike today, the change in this act can be done by American congress.



Anyways, recently US defense Secretary James Mattis has once again requested congress to let President Trump have authority to grant waiver to India for Russian defense deals.



Very soon, US defense bill will be passed and we will see, if India can get waiver or not. However, From today's Trump Putin meeting, we need not have any unrealistic hope in this regard.



Now coming to Iran Nuclear deal, you know, Russia is petrol pump of the world. How much pressure president Trump can apply on Iran, will depend on what understanding Trump and Putin reach today.



President Putin has good relationship with Iran. It would be interesting to see, if Russia commits to increasing oil and gas production in next couple of months in order to contain oil prices going up.



Make no mistake here, it may also happen that Trump and Putin reach unofficial understanding here without any official announcement.



That's where, India needs to be very careful in knowing the real out come of this summit. Future direction for  India Iran relationship may get affected here.



Now, you would be thinking, why Putin may help Trump here. 



Because, Both these leaders may  have Grand bargain on Syria and Ukraine.  



Russia may limit Iranian role in Syria, which shares border with Israel.



On the other hand, America may ensure that Ukrain is not allowed to join Nato, which is a key concern of President Putin.



Lets be realistic here, The probability of this grand bargain is very less.



The point is, at least some sort of understanding in between President Trump and President Putin is welcome so far as Ukrain and Syria are concerned. because it will help in improving bilateral relationship.



Moreover, if Russia and America come closer, its china, which will be at disadvantage.



In the Year 1972, In One of the most historical visits to China, American president Richard Nixon was able to bring China closer to America, which costed heavily to Soviet Union.



This time around, If Russia and America decides to have better relationship, America may get more bargaining power against China in on going trade war.



That's how, The importance for this Trump Putin Summit is high for India. Though it may not directly impact India yet it can end up changing the Indian geo political calculations.



So far as we think. Russia and America will remain competitor in foreseeable future. The key here is to develop an understanding  about managing bilateral differences, so that Third country namely china doesn't end up getting benefit in the fight of America and Russia.



Therefore, we should keep our fingers crossed till the formal announcement is made. Having said that, we should remain careful to see what happens on the ground after this summit. because this announcement may not have all those secret details for very obvious reason.



Being optimistic, From Indian perspective, we can hope positive outcomes after this summit.
