You know, Bhutan remains the last country in South Asia, under Indian area of influence. 

Besides sharing strategically important border, India is largest trading partner of Bhutan. 



As per data of year 2016, 95% Bhutan's exports go to India, and 91% of Bhutan's imports come from India.



Even today ,Bhutan remains the largest beneficiary of Indian foreign aid. Though India has limited financial resources, yet India has been providing generous funding to Bhutan.



However, it appears, People of Bhutan are increasingly getting more interested in their northern neighbor in China for very obvious reasons.



Any increase in Chinese role in Bhutan will lead to reduction in Indian role there. India clearly understands this.



As we have discussed in our last video, Just before the election, Chinese ambassador in India is on Bhutan's visit.



As you can understand, more than the visit, its timing of the visit, which is more important.



In the National Assembly election of the year 2008, Bhutan Peace and Prosperity Party won the election with whopping 45 seats out of total 47 seats, and People's Democratic Party got only 2 seats.



As a result, pro china Jigme Thinley became prime minister, and Bhutan slowly started moving close to China.

Obviously, it was not acceptable to India, Thanks to pathetic diplomatic skill set of UPA regime, Taking short term view, India cut subsidy on Cooking gas and kerosene leading to a crisis in Bhutan.



In the same year 2013, When National assembly election happened, People's Democratic Party won 32 seats and Bhutan Peace and Prosperity Party was limited to 15 seats.



Afterwards, Tshering Tobgay became prime minister, who is considered to be pro India in Bhutan.



After the election, India resumed giving cooking gas and kerosene subsidy to Bhutan in order to normalize relation.



However, make no mistake here, Bhutan Peace and Prosperity Party knows how it lost the election, and How People's Democratic Party has gone from 2 seats in 2008 to majority 32 seats in 2013.



Now, you can understand, why this year's election becomes very important from Indian viewpoint. 



China would obviously want anti India forces to win the election, and intense under cover diplomatic engagement seems to be going on to ensure that Pro China government wins Bhutanese elections in October this year.



Now guess what, if China succeeds in its plan, it can transform Bhutan into a Maldives for India. Anytime, Strategic importance of Bhutan is many times more than the importance of Maldives.



Forget about Boundary dispute resolution in between Bhutan and China, the Establishment of Chinese embassy in Bhutan will result in slide in India Bhutan relationship.



You know, China is taking its time to resolve boundary dispute with India, but it wants to resolve boundary dispute with Bhutan as soon as possible.



Unfortunately, people of Bhutan have started thinking, that China will be beneficial to them, while conveniently forgetting that China will be generous towards Bhutan only because its real target is harming India.



Needless to say, India might also be expecting friendly government to win the election. However, we are not sure if meaningful efforts are being made in this regard.



Nevertheless the point is, no matter how much friendly relationship we try to establish with China, it will continue to reduce Indian role in South Asia.



That's where, we need to be very careful while dealing with China.



In fact, leave Bhutan aside, China would obviously want Modi to lose next election to make its job easier.



Unfortunately, our biggest enemy is also our largest trading partner with massive trade deficit. The money we lose to China in trade each year, is very effectively being used against us in Pakistan, Maldives, Nepal and now in Bhutan.



That's where we Indian need to be very careful in watching Chinese moves. After all there is huge difference in what China says and what China does.
