Back In the year 1954, for the first time strategic value of deep water port at Gwadar city has been identified.

Construction of first phase of Gwadar port could be started only in the year 2001, but this city has always been known for its fishing industry.

Even now, 70% of Gwadar's local population is reliant on Fishing industry for their livelihood.

Needless to say, besides being single source of income, fishing activity has been part of Gwadar's culture and heritage.

But now, Gwadar fisherman's right to access Arabian sea is being challenged.

Since last year September, construction work has started on East Bay Expressway, which is 19 Kilometer long six lane expressway to connect Gwadar port with the Makran Coastal Highway.

This expressway will block up to 4 Kilometer long caost line, which is the safest part of the sea for fishing and docking boats. If This coast line is blocked, the fisherman will have to move out of Gwadar. But bigger question is, where else they will go from here.

For the construction of Gwadar Port, nearby fishing communities were displaced, now where entire fish folk population lives, their access to coast line in the area will be blocked, after this CPEC Express way project is completed.

thanks to Gwadar Port, People of Gwadar have been waiting for new employment opportunities , but now their existing job is facing CPEC threat.

Perhaps, that's why tomorrow Gwadar Fishermen will resume their protest against this CPEC project.

Last year in December month, Fisherman had also called for a strike and refused to undertake any fishing activity in Arabian sea.

Interestingly, all political parties have joined the protest in support of fisherman.

In last three months, Gwadar Fishermen Alliance have met chief minister of Balochistan. Even Prime Minister Imran Khan is aware of fishermen's grievance and demands.

Fishermen were demanding three 200 feet wide underpass access points so that they can access Arabian sea.

But as per current design, only 15 feet wide underpass access points will be provided. Perhaps, smart Chinese Engineers, who designed this expressway assumed that Fisherman will divide their boats into two parts to pass across this CPEC obstruction.

You see, underpasses are already there in the design, these people have been demanding only to increase the width of underpass. but no progress has been made on their demand.

Now, the fishermen community of Gwadar is staring at the possibility of having no access to the warm water of Arabian Sea.

With the sword hanging on their centuries old livelihood, tomorrow Gwadar fisherman have no way other than resuming their protests against East bay Expressway.

Interestingly, China had provided interest free loan of 140 Million Dollar for this express way. Earlier it was planned to be completed by year 2018, now, it is planned to complete by October 2020.

Since project is already facing delay, any redesign of this project will create problem in completing the project as per the timelines.

Needless to say, wider underpasses may lead to cost escalation as well. But the point is bigger here, if Gwadar Port is not providing job opportunities to local people, it should at least not steal their existing jobs of 70% of Gwadar's population.

When China does not listen to the voices of its own people, its understandable that Pakistan will also not care about the protest of local people at Gwadar.

Whole world talk about Gwadar becoming Dubai of Pakistan soon, but no one has time to even talk about the genuine threat to livelihood being faced by people of Gwadar.

We know, Pakistan government has no authority to redesign CPEC project, As long as Pakistan army is behind such project.

The leaders of Gwadar fishermen alliance are wasting their time in meeting political leaders of Pakistan, they should rather meet Military masters of Pakistan.

Hopefully, Pakistan's deaf army will address the genuine livelihood concerns of Gwadar's fisherman.

Anyways, Today's easy question is, How much percentage of Gwadar's population is dependent on fishing industry for their livelihood?
