You might know, Due to global warming, The Arctic is warming faster than any other region on earth. As Arctic ice is melting, the region has opened up to shipping and energy industries.



If current trend goes on, by the end of this century, Arctic shipping route could remain navigable for more than half of the year.



You might know, Going through Arctic ocean, This Northern shipping route can cut the trip between Asia, Europe and North America in Half, in comparison to trip through current route which goes through Suez Canal.



Besides providing shorter route, Arctic ocean also holds massive reserves of oil, gas and other natural resources.



You all know about Chinese Belt and Road Initiative, Last year China presented the concept of Polar Silk road as well.



Last month, the news broke out that China has been building worlds biggest nuclear ice breaker, so that its ship can easily sail through Arctic ocean.



These nuclear powered ice breakers cut the ice in polar region, so that ships behind it can sail through the water covered with Ice.



Before China started building this nuclear ice breaker, only Russia used to build and operate two powerful nuclear ice breakers.



America doesn't want to be left behind, perhaps that's why Last February America allocated 675 Million Dollars to fund new ice breaker to cut the ice of Arctic sea.



While America and China don't share Arctic ocean, Russia is in the Arctic region. This week, Indian foreign secretary showed greater Indian involvement in Russian plan to develop vast and resource rich Arctic region.



Earlier Russia and China have collaborated, but now it appears, Russian President Putin wants more Indian participation to counter balance rising Chinese influence in Russian backyard.



The question is simple, when we have recently shown our capability to hit the satellite in the space, shall we not have capability to protect our interest in this emerging Arctic region?



If India doesn't participate now, we will lag behind China in Arctic ocean as well.





When all global power are playing in Arctic region, its time India to join Hands with friendly countries to write the rules of engagement in Arctic ocean.





If We all countries don't cooperate, Arctic ocean may also become another south china sea. Though its highly unlikely, but no body should take Chinese encroachment tendencies lightly.



Interestingly, India became observer of Arctic council in the year 2013. Despite huge potential in this region, we have limited our role to scientific research in north pole.



The time has come to move ahead from Scientific research to commercial use of Arctic ocean.



Rest assured, Whether we play or not in this arctic region, world powers have already came up with their plans. In fact, we are already late in the game.



Moreover, Russia is increasingly feeling more threatened by Chinese Belt and Road initiative. Perhaps that's why Russia is now actively working to come up with Russian version of Belt and Road initiative.



You know, India and Russia are already working together on North South Transport corridor. If  Russia comes up with belt and road like bigger program, India should positively look to join it.



We hope, Like China, Russia will not seek to build infrastructure in Pakistan occupied Kashmir. India and Russia have long history of friendship, we assume, Russia will be mindful of Indian red lines.



How India proceeds ahead in Arctic region, it will be decided by how you vote in this general election. Rather than thinking about next five years, Please consider about future generations while casting the votes and elect the government accordingly.



Its important because, whether we think about next 50 years or not. Our main adversary china is already thinking about next 100 years and planning to rule over the world.
