you all know, Kenya is one of the African countries badly caught in Chinese debt trap with 72% of its debt owed to China alone.
Interestingly, the debt trap becomes more severe when Kenya has been already running with huge trade deficit with China.
Normally, we all are aware of China dumping low quality cheap Chinese electronics goods in other countries. But China has gone much ahead, its also dumping cheap agricultural products in other countries.
Its different matter that our attention doesn't go on how trade with China is proving dangerous to the lives of poor farmers in other countries.
More importantly for agricultural dominated Indian economy, what China has done in Kenya becomes a key learning lesson.
you might know, 40 percent of Kenyan population is dependent on agriculture for their livelihood.
Garlic is one of the main crops for Kenyan farmer. In fact, Kenyan farmers are proud of really sweet garlic they grow on fertile Volcanic ash.
However, when Cheap Chinese Garlic has flooded in Kenyan market, how will Kenyan farmers be able to sell their high quality Garlic at premium price.
Poor Kenyan Consumer tend to prefer low quality Chinese garlic to high quality Kenyan Garlic.
Therefore Kenyan farmers want their government to put tariff on China, so that Chinese garlic dumping in Kenyan market stops.
What is surprising is, rather than protecting the livelihood of their farmers,Kenyan government is protecting China by saying that , there is more demand for Garlic, and Kenyan farmers are not able to meet the local demand.
As a result, Kenya has to import 50% of Garlic demand from other countries.
When Government is sinking in Chinese debt, its obvious that they will protect Chinese interest rather than livelihood of local farmers.
If you may recall, we discussed in one of our recent videos, last year in October, in order to protect the livelihood of local fisherman, Kenya proposed to halt fish import from China.
In response China threatened trade war to poor Kenya. The result was, even before implementing ban of Chinese fish dumping in Kenyan fish market, Kenya had to relent and allowed Chinese fish import to continue.
The point is, When political leaders were happily taking loans from china, Public of Kenya remained silent.
Now when Kenya is caught in Chinese debt trap, Kenyan fisherman and garlic farmers are paying the price.
You know, Due to rising unemployment Indian youth have been paying the price for rising Indian trade with China.
If we Indians don't learn from Kenyan example and take preventive steps, One day Indian farmers will also pay the price of Indian trade with China.
Lets once again remember, If our youth are not getting jobs after passing out from college, its because Chinese Labor is working day and night in slave labor camps in China
This example confirms that, now Kenya has no way to stop both Chinese fish and garlic dumping. But we people should learn from it, and ensure that our politicians not only focus on reducing Indian trade deficit with China, but also prevent Chinese agri cultural products from flooding our Indian market.
