Just before the Indian visit of American foreign secretary, America has appreciated India reducing import of Iranian oil, and signaled the continuity in the exemption of Chabahar port from American sanctions.
As future of Chabahar port appears bright, Afghanistan held agricultural expo in Mumbai to highlight Made in Afghanistan products in India.
As per Afghan minister, Due to Chabahar project, India and Afghanistan have made great progress in trade aspect. however In the area of investment the progress is yet to be made.
Significantly, Afghanistan is also struggling with higher cost of using trade route via Chabahar port.
As per Afghan minister, for Afghanistan cost of using Chabahar port is more in comparison to Karachi port.
For Afghanistan, the biggest challenge with Chabahar port is, that there is no afghan shipping line company, which can actually carry the containers and cargo from Chabahar port to Indian port.
In the past, an Indian marine line company has indeed shown interest in doing joint investment with Afghan partner to form a shipping line company.
You know, higher transport cost is biggest problem to increase the volume of export from Afghanistan to India.
If we carefully see, Though American sanctions have allowed continuity of operation on Chabahar port, yet the growth of operations has been seriously impacted.
Hopefully, Modi government will look into this Afghan issue, the effort should be made to reduce the cost of transport.
So far as growth of operations is concerned, more than american sanctions, the on going Afghanistan peace dialogue in between America and Taliban might also be affecting the future plans of companies, which can invest in Chabahar port.
Needless to say, recent shooting of American drone by Iran has also increased the tension significantly.
As we all know, peace and stability are must for any commercial activity to flourish. Hopefully, in upcoming months more clarity will come.
However, the present state of operation should be maintained. Hopefully, India and Afghanistan trade continue to go on via chabahar port.
