You all know, South China sea dispute has never been about the water but about the oil and gas buried deep inside.



As you can see in this picture, inside the red line, China claims entire south china sea as its own. However this region inside red line overlaps the exclusive economic zones of other countries sharing south China sea.



Expecting friendship with China, While Philippines has effectively surrendered, but Vietnam has been consistently standing to protect its exclusive economic zone for last couple of years.



On July 3, China sent its survey ship into the exclusive economic zone of Vietnam, where energy rich Vanguard Bank is located.



Needless to say, Chinese survey ship was escorted with Chinese coast guards and maritime militia. Some of the vessels were owned by Chinese energy companies as well.



Seeing Chinese ships in its area, 9 Vietnamese vessels closely followed the activity.



Since then both sides are facing each other in the disputed area, and neither side has withdrawn from the area.



Hence there is possibility of accidental shooting or ramming of boats, which will send the tension high.





You might recall, This is not the first time, when Maritime face off is happening in between China and Vietnam. Five years back similar face off started, when China tried drilling in the disputed area.



Thanks the appropriate response from Vietnamese people, Suffering major face loss, China had to stop its activity in the area one month before its own time line.



For now China is not appearing to back down, Chinese official statement is saying their policy for south china sea is clear & consistent and they will protect their sovereignty over South China sea.



However, on 11 July Prime Minister of Vietnam has asked coast guards to stay vigilant and ready to fight in the wake of unpredictable development.



Its really good to hear a prime minister, who is standing in front of china.



Though both China and Vietnam have not publicly accepted the face off in the south china sea, yet there is plenty of details available in media about the ongoing face off in between China & Vietnam.



If Vietnam holds its ground, Chinese ship will have to return. China is following creeping encroachment policy under the assumption that other countries will not dare to stop and fight with it.



With Vietnam standing firm. Before starting drilling, China has to do the calculation if it will fight with Vietnam, or withdraw from its exclusive economic zone.
