Back in the year 2013, During his Tanzania visit, Chinese president signed an agreement on $10 Billion Bagamoyo port project, which has been planned to become largest port in Africa.
Construction work on this project formally started in the year 2015, however opposition parties of Tanzania complained that such a huge port project agreement had been signed without consulting Parliament.
Needless to say, Financial terms and conditions were never revealed in the public.
Interestingly, In 2015 general election of Tanzania, current president was forced to defend the project, when opposition presidential candidate was campaigning for the cancellation of the project.
Next general election of Tanzania is scheduled to take place in the year 2020, Hence last month Tanzanian president has publicly scrapped massive Chinese project.
Domestic politics of Tanzania aside, lets quickly discuss why this 10 Billion Dollar Chinese project has been cancelled.
As part of the agreement, Tanzania government was to give 33 years guarantee that Poor Tanzania will provide compensation to Rich China in case of any loss during project implementation, and poor Tanzania was forced to provide tax waivers to this port.
In addition, This port was supposed to be given to China on lease for 99 years. Moreover after the port is operational, Tanzania was not having any authority to question whosoever comes to invest in this port.
In the words of Tanzanian president, China was taking Tanzanian land and building a port for their use for a century. And Tanzania was to pay for the construction of the port.
Interestingly, this port will occupy 800 Hectares of land. To compensate the displaced, 50 Million Dollars have been spent. but as per president of Tanzania, this money has never reached the Poor victims.
You all are aware of massive corruption in China funded projects.
Anyways, lets quickly consider, why China asked for guarantee against any loss for 33 years. The point is simple, Bagamayo port project was another infrastructural white elephant project.
you see, this proposed port is located at 70 Kilometer distance from one of the largest Tanzanian Dar es salam port in the south. You tell, without diverting traffic from Dar port, how can this Chinese Bagamayo project could have become successful.
More importantly, Once the Bagamayo port is built, Tanzania was asked not to build port in between Tanga in North and matwara in South.
In Simple words, in lieu of Chinese financing for the Bagamayo port, Tanzania has lost the sovereignty to build any new port across its coast line for next 100 years.
You all can see, the cost of Chinese loans for Tanzania.
Due to such adverse conditions for the host country, before signing the agreement first condition of china is, the details must never be revealed to the public.
Fortunately, in case of Bagamayo project, Tanzanian president himself has spilled the Chinese beans in front of whole world.
Anyways, you all know, Politicians can sell their nations. public cannot afford to sell their motherland. Just before next election, Tanzanian president has woken up and scrapped this chinese project.
Whats surprising is, such a huge 10 Billion Dollar Chinese project has been rejected by Tanzania, but Global Media and specially Indian media is not at all interested in it.
If Indian or American project worth even 10 Million Dollar has been cancelled, whole media would have shouted from the mountain top.
God knows, why our media always chooses to deflate Chinese failure but inflate Chinese success.
